Spinster Abbott's is hard to put in one category, and that's the charm. It's a taproom, a bodega, a coffee bar, and a hangout all rolled into one chill, retro Old Florida space in Uptown St. Augustine. Walk in for a morning espresso, come back for a cold Florida beer in the afternoon, grab a few groceries on your way out, it's that kind of place.
The story behind the name is worth knowing. It's named for Lucy Abbott, a woman who in the 1800s broke with convention, never married, started buying up land on her own, and built over 100 houses in the area. The whole surrounding neighborhood, the Abbott Tract, is named after her. That history fits the place, independent, a little unconventional, and rooted in this town.
On the drinks side you've got a big selection of Sunshine State and regional brews, prosecco on tap, canned cocktails, thoughtfully chosen wines, and a full espresso bar with Florida roasted beans. The retro speakeasy decor, vintage furniture, and easy vibe make it the kind of spot where you settle in. There's live music on weekends, plus an ever changing lineup of trivia, bingo, karaoke, and markets. On nice evenings when it's packed, they roll up the garage door and the whole place opens to the outside.
A couple of bonuses share the space: the Hotbox food truck slings Hawaiian inspired fare, and Snakebird Vintage handles the curated clothing and treasures. So you can drink, eat, and shop without moving your car.
My wife and I love coming here for a night out. I can grab a beer while she gets a kombucha, and nobody feels left out. One important local tip: do not park at the Firestone across the street. It does not matter the time of day, they will tow your car. Find another spot and save yourself the headache.
